Edinburgh in August – 2 Major Events

Posted on October 15, 2021February 1, 2022

To go or not to go? That is the question.

Edinburgh in August is crazy fun. It is way crowded but that’s because there is SOOOO much to experience!

The two major events are the Fringe Festival and the Military Tattoo. You might think, “Oh I’m not interested in fringe or military.” Hang on – these are extravaganzas.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe

1) Edinburgh Festival Fringe: “For three weeks in August, the city of Edinburgh welcomes an explosion of creative energy from around the globe. Artists and performers take to hundreds of stages all over the city to present shows for every taste. From big names in the world of entertainment to unknown artists looking to build their careers, the festival caters for everyone and includes theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, circus, cabaret, children’s shows, musicals, opera, music, spoken word, exhibitions and events.”

  • Loads of people on the Royal Mile
  • Performances all over town
  • Street Performers on the Royal Mile

Next year it is from 05 to 29 August 2022 – 75th anniversary of the festival. https://www.edfringe.com/experience/how-to-plan. And this site has some good pictures of what you might see at the Fringe: https://www.edinburghfestivalcity.com/festivals/edinburgh-festival-fringe

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo

2) The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is one of the most iconic events in Edinburgh’s calendar. On the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade, set against the backdrop of Edinburgh’s imposing castle from 5th – 27th August 2022. You might ask, “What’s an Esplanade?” It is the entrance to the castle with bleachers – with seats- set up in a U shape facing the castle. Organizations from all over the world to come perform. Of course there is Scottish piping and dancing, but the year we went there were also motorcyclists. https://www.edintattoo.co.uk/

There are a couple of sites that list all of the things happening:

Note: Air Conditioning is not common in Scotland so keep this in mind when looking for hotels and check the weather before you go so you know what type of clothes to pack.
